Redispersible polymer powder (RDP powder) is usually mixed with cellulose ether and other additives to improve the performance of cement-based or gypsum based mortar, such as increasing water retention, extending opening time, improving construction performance, enhancing adhesion to various substrates, and improving flexural strength and flexibility. Its technological advantage lies in the ability to improve the cohesion, flexibility, bonding strength, and most importantly, waterproof performance of mortar, and form thin films with high tensile strength and bonding strength on different substrates.

Differentiating Flexible vs. Semi-Flexible Redispersible Polymer Powder (RDP)
The selection between Flexible and Semi-flexible RDP depends heavily on the dynamic stress requirements of the construction environment.
1. Flexible RDP powder features a lower glass transition temperature (Tg), enabling it to form a highly resilient, rubber-like film upon redispersion. It serves as the industry standard for high-deformation and outdoor systems—such as External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS/EIFS) and flexible tile adhesives (C2/S1/S2 grades)—where absorbing severe thermal expansion and structural movement is vital.
2. Semi-flexible RDP powder operates with a moderate (Tg) near ℃, offering a perfect structural compromise. It delivers an optimized balance of standard flexibility and superior cohesive tensile strength, making it exceptionally well-suited for interior wall putties, standard tile grouts, and base-layer repair mortars that require excellent crack prevention without sacrificing surface hardness.
